PRESENTATION

The University of Alicante's Wireless Network is an enlargement of the University of Alicante's Local Area Network allowing access to the Internet and further telecommunication services without the need of having a fixed connection to the network.

This service is available for all university members from the Campus of San Vicente. The main aim is to allow university members to access UA computing resources, regardless of their not being allocated in a hall with fixed computing resources. Thus, any user at the Social Club (I), near the Lecture Building no. 2, in front of the General Library or even at the “Bosque Ilustrado” (seated opposite the lake) can start “a wireless connection” to the UA Network and have access to the most common resources: visiting the www.ua.es web site, viewing their subjects' latest news, downloading users' manuals, viewing the video introducing the academic year, etc ...

It is based on wireless technology standard, IEEE 802.11b allowing data transmission at a speed of 11Mbps. Communication is performed by radio frequency between the mobile device (portable computer, PDA, etc.) and a number of antennas (access points) distributed around the university campus. The mobile device should incorporate a wireless card to establishing communication with the nearest Access Point.
