BICICAMPUS (CAMPUSBIKE)

BICICAMPUS was launched in 1993 by the University of Alicante with the support of Miguel Indurain and Perico Delgado (first-class Spanish cyclist), who led a popular and spectacular march  towards Alicante city in order to CLAIM the right to a bike lane, still unsettled.

A project designed by  professors Ivors Samuels and David Smith from Oxford Brookes University , was handled to the mayor of Alicante.  Nevertheless, the University of Alicante has been trying to promote the usage of the bicicle as it happens in other well-known university campuses. This is the reason why several bike's parkings were installed next to the university buildings and crash helmets were distributed to those students cycling to the campus. During our so-called  Week for Health, organised by the Nursing University School, more than 8o bicicampus were delivered to be used for displacements within the campus; security keepers are currently handing out cycling clips and, moreover, new cycling routes connected to the campus (Playa Albufereta-Campus de San Vicent, for instance) have been designed to avoid cyclists getting involved with traffic.   .

The AutoColega campaign, whose adhesive is shown below, is mainly intended to convince the university community to make the best use of their vehicles by sharing them with other occupants, trying to avoid the use of single-drivers vehicles. By doing so, we would save petrol as well as unnecessary traffic jams. This simple idea would be easily seen under the slogan: "Let's share my car today, tomorrow will be yours".
