Universitat d'Alacant / Universidad de Alicante
Historic University of Orihuela's Presidents (1608-1810)
The university tradition in the province of Alicante has a historical referent of which we, as university students, feel very proud of it. More than two centuries of university activity are shown in two excellent cloisters, the Renaissance one and the properly university one, baroque. Both are authentical patrimonial jewels within an exceptional  monumental  frame: Orihuela.

That is why we are encoraged to recover our province historic background so as to know from the fisrt Vice-Chancellors at the University of Orihuela. Promoted by Fernando de Loazes, more than a hundred Presidents have guided the transmission of knowledge having to do with Humanities, Law, Teology, Medicine.... among others. The excellent Velazquez's " Las tentaciones de Santo Tomás de Aquino" - today shown at the diocese museum- is a very good example of the cultural magnificence of this period, witness of the university students' concerns at that time.
The Church and the University of Alicante are trying to jointly recover the historic background of the ancient Univerity of Orihuela by an agreement held recently. Fernando Rodríguez –University of Orihuela's Vice-chancellor and our Honorary Vice-chancellor, Professor Antonio Gil Olcina, University of Alicante's first Vice-chancellor, are developing a renewed and exciting project thanks to the University of Orihuela's wealthy heritage
