1. INTRODUCTION

The University of Alicante has aimed strongly at using new information and communication technologies so as to provide the students with the best training when facing the information society that has already been developed at every field (work, social, cultural...)

2. STUDENTS' FREE ENTRANCE TO COMPUTING ROOMS

Means are required for developing  and guaranteeing access to information technologies: that is why the University of Alicante, aware of the students lack of -in most cases- both personal computers and internet access at home, is trying to solve the situation by creating FREE ENTRANCE COMPUTING ROOMS, fully equipped with the best technology, Internet access and further transmission data services. 

2.1. The computing rooms distribution and facilities:

2.2. Software and data transmission services for students
The PCs available at the free entrance computing rooms are provided with the following software:

2.2.1. Microsoft Office Package: Word text processor, Access database, Excel and  Power Point for graphic design which will be of relevant help for written works, teaching practices and so forth.

2.2.2. On-line campus

On-line campus is a complementary service for teaching purposes and also for academic and administrative management in the Internet. This service is directed both to teachers and the students as well as to the administrative personnel at the University of Alicante. This service access is managed from the University of Alicante's  on-line campus website by introducing an access key and the student's identity card
Through this on-line campus website, the student can choose the following options: INFORMATION, REGISTER OFFICE, TEACHING RELATED, ACCESS CONTROL:
A. INFORMATION
  • Help

  • Useful information on how to navigate around the on-line campus
     
  • Studies

  • List of all the degrees taught at the University of Alicante where you can click on each of them to see all the details included in it and you can even know more by clicking on every single subjects (description, number of credits, department/s where the subject is taught, timetable, list of registered students for the subject and so forth).
    If you click on "more information", an index card will be displayed for you to know more things about the degree concerned, which includes: entry requirements, years taken to fulfil the degree, objectives, labour market possibilities, other degrees continuance/access to second cycle degrees, Official Bulletin where both the concerned degree guidelines and syllabus were made public as well as the year and the centre where the new program was carried out.
    Under the epigraph "Complementary courses to access second cycle degrees" is shown a list of compulsory subjects to access the second cycle of the degree you are interested in. This option is only available in those degrees where the possibility to access second cycles from other degrees exits. 
     
  • Official announcements

  • Here you can consult official announcements of the University of Alicante in general and particularly of the faculty or centre to which the degree where you have been registered  belongs.
  • My teachers

  • List of all the lecturers as well as their pictures, e-mail addresses and the department to which they belong. Also tutorials timetable is available from here.
  • My class-mates

  • Here you will find all the class-mates from a particular subject and their e-mail addresses.
     
    a) REGISTRATION INFORMATION
    Section where you will be informed about everything regarding registration, grants, financial help and required documentation. 
    • Grants

    • Complete information about the grants on general basis offered by the Ministry of Education and Culture, wit information about academic requirements, documentation and terms for submission. Call for Fees exemption from the Generalitat Valenciana and the University of Alicante.
    • Financial assistance from the  CAM

    • The CAM (Mediterranean Savings Bank) offers huge advantages for students at the University so they can pay their registration by comfortable instalments and many other advantages offered by CAM Joven.
    • Calendar

    • You will be informed about registration terms by degrees and a link for computing rooms to submit your registration electronically. Location and open hours are also available from here.
    • Computing rooms

    • List of all the computing rooms available at the University so you can fill in your registration form. Maps to show the location, open hours and so on.
    • Papers

    • All the papers you need when submitting your registration at the Register Office, always depending on your academic situation, that is to say, if you are a new student or already registered in previous years.
         
B. REGISTER OFFICE
The on-line register office offers you the chance to access your student record as well as to change your personal details, if appropriate. You will find two entries: data modification and data consultation. Personal and registration data are only allowed to be changed when the registration period is open, after this, the Registry office will be in charge of this task.
    a) Fill in the form
    • Personal details

    • Modification of the personal details of your student record.
    • Addresses

    • Modification of the postal address whenever it is changed so as to receive correctly all the correspondence from the University.
    • Registration

    • Where you should fill in your registration form. You will find all the subjects from your syllabus, list of the ones you have already passed or those free elective subjects that you can be registered
    b) Consultations
    • Student record

    • You can check all your academic and personal data.
    • Registration

    • Report on registration data (subjects registered, credits, etc...)
    • Timetable

    • Information on all your subjects timetable. Check all the timetables to avoid coincidence of any subject when you are filling in the registration form. 
    • Receipts

    • Where the total amount of your registration is specified. The payment will automatically made on two installments.If you wish only one payment, you must show it. 
C. TEACHING PURPOSE
This section has three possibilities available: see, do and collect

    • Professors will show here the recommended bibliography.

    •  Each subject's professor details, including photo, telephone number, e-mail and tutorials.

    • Each teacher will display here a list of the commonest doubts for the students to check them.

    • Very useful section to get answers from your teachers through University on-line.
    b) Do
     
    • Tutorials

    • You will be allowed to submit questions to your teachers and keep in direct contact with them. 
    • Discussions

    • This section offers you the possibility to keep in direct contact with your classmates by raising questions, getting answers, requesting information and so forth.
    c) Collect
    • Materials

    • Notes, handouts and  bibliographical material will be easily found here.
D. ACCESS CONTROL
  • Connections

  • Detailed report of all the connections to University on-line during the last two weeks, showing the day, hour and computer from which the connection took place.
  • Statistics

  • Information chart including connection timetable during the last 30 days.
  • Code change

  • You will be allowed to change your password but care must be taken to avoid future problem when acceding the net.
2.2.3. Electronic mail
Students at the University of Alicante have available electronic mail accounts ,with a 3 MB capacity, which you can access from any mail program supporting the POP3 or IMAP protocol ( Netscape, Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, Pegasus Mail, ...).
The electronic-mail personal account will be communicated to all students by a letter directed to the address given on the registration form. Whether you  have not received the letter yet or have lost your password, contact the Information Office.
A change of the initial given password is recommended, as well as a periodical change of password so as to avoid other people to know it. The password change can be done through the following web site: http://mail.alu.ua.es/email. >From this site, further operations can be achieved. For instance, you can re-address your e-mail box or your answering machine etc...  Anyway, if you have never used this electronic mail or you have difficulties in using it, short courses are available for you to improve your knowledge on this matter. 
2.2.4. Direct access to Library catalogues and Databases
Through the free-access computers, the student will be able to consult the bibliographic catalogue of the University which includes most of the documents' references available at the libraries: books, magazines and other bibliographical material such as video-cassettes, records, CDs.... Information on the books ready to be acquired or those on loan is also given through this catalogue consultation
Database consultation via web , CD-ROM’s consultation or electronic magazines summaries are further services provided at the libraries. Multimedia CD-ROMs are reported in their own web page.
2.2.5. X-500 directory and distribution list
You can contact the university community staff (both teaching and administrative) as well as the different services through the University of Alicante X-500 directory, at its web site.
2.2.6. Program Servers and Files
The Computing Service at the University of Alicante is provided with the most interesting software, from which you can transfer both files and programs such as graphic visual display units, images editors, compressors/decompressors, HTML editors, navigators, anti-virus and so forth. Consult here
2.2.7. Pre-recorded printing
The possibility of pre-recorded printing from the free-access computers is being taken into account. If available, the printed documents would be collected at one of the printers located on the General library ground floor.
2.2.8. Tabarca searcher
The Computing Service at the University of Alicante has introduced a brand-new search engine with the most interesting links for university students
2.3 Directions for the computing rooms usage

 

  
1- The computer use is only for academic-related activities.
2- The computers are provided with the best equipment for the students to use, therefore, software installation is not allowed to users.
3- All the machines, except for those for catalogue consultation (OPACS) and those of the CD-ROM net, can be used by appointment (one day time at least). 

- Computers for special usage (multimedia and ONCE) will be reserved at the desks of the floor where they are located.
- Computing equipment for office computer system and information purpose should be reserved on the corresponding floor where support-computing staff is ready to help you.
- Reservation for the office computing equipment will be for a maximum period of two hours, except 4 computers on each floor which are available only for half for quick consultations.
- Information computers are by appointment for one hour each.
- Open hours for the computers use: 8.45 to  20.45.
4- All the computers are available Monday to Friday.

5- All the computers are for individual use. This rule will help to keep silence as the computers are located at the library.

6- The TIU (University identity card) should be submitted to check membership to the University.

7- Non members cannot make reservations. They will be only allowed to use spare computers as far as they are available.

The breach of any of these rules will result in loss of computer privileges
