Ricardo Miguel Alfonso is Associate Professor of English and
American Literature at the University of Castilla-La Mancha. He has
published essays on such figures as Robert Coover, Nathaniel
Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Adam Smith and Edward Said. His work
as a translator includes Spanish versions of Emerson’s Essays (Espasa
Calpe 2001), a selection of William Hazlitt’s writings on art and
poetics (Espasa Calpe 2004) and George Santayana’s The Life of Reason
in Art (Verbum forthcoming). His current research focusses on the role
of Emerson in the emergence and consolidation of American Studies, on
the one hand, and the rise of modern aesthetics and poetics in the
Scottish Enlightenment, on the other.
